About Sara

Sara Fruehe is a versatile educator and artist, currently serving as Assistant Professor of Bassoon at the Columbus State University Schwob School of Music. Renowned for her versatility, Dr. Fruehe’s career spans chamber, orchestral, and solo performance, as well as an ongoing commitment to expanding bassoon and chamber music repertoires.  

 

Sara’s performance is both dynamic and diverse. She is currently interim principal bassoon with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and second bassoon with the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra and has performed with notable ensembles such as the Atlanta Opera, and the symphonies of Terre Haute (IN), Columbus (IN), Owensboro (KY), Battle Creek (MI).  Dr. Fruehe is also a frequent performer at prestigious festivals, including the International Double Reed Society, College Music Society, among others. 

 

Actively expanding the bassoon’s repertoire, Sara has commissioned, premiered, and recorded works by composers such as P.Q. Phan, Brian Raphael Nabors, Althea Talbot-Howard, Leigha Amick, and Kevin Wilt. Additionally, Sara is a founding member of Volante Winds, a woodwind quintet that has toured extensively across the U.S. and East Asia, performing contemporary works and engaging audiences with new music. 

 

A highly regarded clinician and masterclass presenter, Dr. Fruehe has been invited to teach and perform at universities and colleges across the U.S., in addition to serving as artist-faculty at the Schwob Summer Music Festival and IU Summer Music Clinic summer programs for high school students. 

 

Dr. Fruehe holds degrees from Indiana University (D.M. and B.M.) and DePaul University (M.M.).
